Africa and central Asia now prime areas for transnational crime

A new United Nations report has suggested that organised crime has become a global force.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime has called organised crime one of the foremost economic and armed powers in the world, threatening international peace and national sovereignty.

The criminal market now spans the globe according to the new report, which shows that in some regions, including west Africa and central Asia, trans-national crime has become the biggest threat to peace and development.

In discussing organised crime techniques, the UN report detailed the demand that now exists for drugs, prostitution, cheap labour and counterfeit goods in many under-developed countries.

Illegal and counterfeit goods especially are being trafficked at a rate whereby volume almost matches the flow of the legal trade.
