NEC stadium closed after collapse of stand

20 Oct 2021, 02:05 GMT+10

THE HAGUE, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Goffert stadium in Nijmegen, a city in mid-eastern Netherlands, will remain closed for the time being after part of a stand collapsed during a league match between NEC Nijmegen and Vitesse Arnhem on Sunday, Dutch soccer club NEC Nijmegen announced on Tuesday.

After the derby in Nijmegen, fans of Vitesse Arnhem celebrated the 1-0 victory with the team and part of the stand collapsed. No one was injured. A container under the stand prevented a complete fall of the stand.

The closure of the stadium has been imposed by the Nijmegen Region Environment Agency (ODRN) and NEC Nijmegen fully agrees with that. The cause of the collapse is yet unknown. The municipality of Nijmegen, which owns the stadium, ordered an investigation of the incident.

The ODRN itself also investigates which checks have been carried out in the Goffert stadium in the past. The stadium was declared safe in January this year.

NEC Nijmegen's next home game is scheduled for October 31 against FC Groningen. It is unlikely that this match can be played in the Goffert stadium.
