European Commission to present "Defence Readiness" roadmap: source

BRUSSELS, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission will propose a Defence Readiness roadmap ahead of the October European Council summit, a Commission source told Xinhua on Monday.

A scoping paper outlining four flagship defence initiatives has been sent to EU member states to shape talks at an informal leaders' meeting in Copenhagen on Wednesday, said the source, who was not authorized to speak publicly on the issue.

The four projects are the European Drone Wall, the Eastern Flank Watch, the Air Defence Shield and the Defence Space Shield.

"All member states are invited to take part on a voluntary basis," the source said, adding that participation rules will be discussed first in Copenhagen and then at the European Council in October.

The Commission is due to adopt the roadmap on Oct. 16 before sending it to the EU's co-legislators, the source said.

According to the Commission agenda, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte will attend a security meeting of the College of Commissioners on Tuesday.
